When the Russian town of Tot'ma became part of the northern river route it was a hub of trade between Western Europe, European Russia, and Siberia, and its merchants thrived and even sponsored trading expeditions to Russian America. The town had the wealth and patronage to foster art. Works made in the region constitute the bulk of the collections of painting, wooden sculpture, and metalwork, which are folk in their origins and demonstrate a native vigor different from the academic or westernized styles of St. Petersburg and Moscow, but which are nevertheless highly accomplished.
