Among the donations were applied and decorative arts, arms and armor, folk costume, rare books; a unique collection of church art-icons, royal doors, embroidered icons and altar cloths, chalices, crosses, reliquaries collected and donated by Grand Prince Sergei Aleksandrovich in the 1870s; and paintings commissioned by Alexander III including a Vereshchagin's vividly imagined scene of Moscow set on fire by the retreating Russians and his portrait of Napoleon bundled in fur with a look of consternation.
