St. Petersburg: ARS, 2006. sewn cl. Volume 2 of this encyclopedia of applied arts based on the Hermitage collections covers Russian furniture, bronzes, costume, and textiles. Since many of the works are not on permanent exhibition, they become accessible only in publication. Entries on each piece are exhaustive and proceed from years of research by scholars at the Hermitage. They make much new information available on artists and workshops, update attributions and dates, identify analogues in other collections. Another theme is the close connection between the decorative arts and the work of architects and sculptors. Especially valuable is the array of illustrations the authors have compiled: besides photos of the works in the Hermitage, they have selected rare drawings from catalogues, watercolors, and archival photographs of interiors in which the works were originally used. Volume 2: 296 pp., 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 ins. ins., 28 b-&-w illus., 308 color, Rus. Item #2029
