St. Petersburg: Herm, 2016. Sewn cl. Besides a full-page illustration for each work, many details, including two-page spreads, bring out the most distinctive facets of design. The Hermitage owns great works from various periods in the history of furniture design, such as an 1893 art nouveau table by Émile Gallé, in which the artist incorporated various materials (five kinds of wood, glass, metal) and several techniques of construction (marquetry, incrustation, engraving, embossing); an empire style dressing table of 1817 commissioned from Martin Guillaume Biennais with bronze ornaments in the form of swans, rosettes, and arrows; a commode of the last third  of the eighteenth century by Leonard Boudin with bouquets and musical compositions, five kinds of wood, ormolu, and marble; an early eighteenth century table attributed to the Italian artist Gennaro and using images traceable to several other artists. The author points out provenance, characterizes style, and describes subjects of designs. 471 p., approx. 400 color illus., ENGLISH. Item #2103
