Rerikh, eldest son of the painter, philosopher, and social activist Nikolai Roerich, went on his first expedition to the Himalayas in 1923, during which he began collecting Tibetan paintings, becoming a pioneering researcher of Tibet of tangkas. The paintings he collected, now in the Hermitage, represent several periods and styles from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century.
