St. Isaac’s Cathedral: The State Museum of Russian Ecclesiastic Architecture, Sculpture, Painting, and Mosaics

St. Petersburg: ? 2000. Pb. This book has become timely as the St. Petersburg government has plans to give the St. Isaac's to the Russian Orthodox Church, which will likely curtail research and study of its architecture and art. The author summarizes the complex building history of the church that occupies the central position in the ensemble of one of St. Petersburg’s grandest public spaces, St. Isaac’s. Especially useful is the appendix of biographical sketches of the architects, engineers, painters, mosaicists, and sculptors who worked on the cathedral. It was a model of collaboration as the French architect Auguste Montferrand, Emperor Nikolai I, and the Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church employed the most talented Russian sculptors and painters of the period, such as P. Klodt, N. Pimenov and K. Briullov, as well as German, Italian, and French artists, including T. Neff, F. Bruni, and P. Lemaire. 65 p. + 31 pls., 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 ins., 11 b-&-w illus., 33 color, ENGLISH. Item #2275
