Seeing these works together we can realize the breadth of Vasilii Vasnetsov's achievement. He has the command of detail of the great realists, the brilliance and drama of romanticism, and the ironic tone of modernists especially in his battle paintings for which he accompanied the army, risking his life to pursue his art (he died in an explosion on a ship while seeking material from the Russo-Japanese War). He was a chronicler of empire often painting the Russian Empire's exotic borderlands of Central Asia and the Caucasus.
