These portrait miniatures exhibited at Pavlovsk Museum-Preserve were commissioned or collected by the empress Maria Fedorovna, wife of Paul I, in the late eighteenth and easily nineteenth century for her own portrait room. The content is valuable as depictions of the empress's court, family and friends. Many of the paintings by Russian and Western European artists show the high artistic level of miniature portraiture about a quarter century before photography would supersede memento portraiture.
