St. Petersburg: Pavlovsk, 2008. sewn pb. Grand Duke Paul (later Emperor Paul) commissioned at Robert’s Paris studio in the 1780s four architectural fantasies for the ballroom of Pavlovsk Palace, then being designed by Cameron, and the paintings by the great eighteenth-century master of architectural landscapes became an integral part of the palace’s interiors. Paul acquired more paintings by Robert when he became emperor and so did his wife Maria Fedorovna after Paul’s death. This Pavlovsk Museum exhibition catalogue displays all twelve of Robert’s paintings at Pavlovsk: the illustrations are of high quality, and each work followed by several details convey the force and beauty of Robert's art. Biographical chapters illuminate Robert's rapport with those who commissioned his works in Russia; besides Paul and Maria Fedorovna, the collectors and art patrons Alexander Sergeevich Stroganov and Nikolai Borisovich Yusupov commissioned works by Robert as did Alexander I, of whom Robert wrote in the early 1800s: "The Russian Emperor for whom, I recently did several paintings, paid so well, that it would be unheard of here, and added out of munificence and satisfaction with my work a beautiful and valuable diamond and also a document about honorary membership in the St. Petersburg Academy." 127 p., 20 x 20 cm, 45 color and b/w illus., Rus.
