St. Petersburg: Pavlovsk, 2016. Sewn pb. France, the preeminent maker of works of applied and decorative art during the period, is the source of most of the works in the Pavlovsk collection. The collection history is traceable in documents on the acquisition and decor of Pavlovsk from the early 1780s when Pavlovsk was begun and when Paul (Pavel) and Maria Fedorovna were traveling in Western Europe — most of the works were acquired for use in the palace. Among the first pieces acquired were a pair of candelabras with figures of nymphs designed by Etienne-Maurice Falconet. The collection comprises works by most of the best bronze workers in France. The author recounts the stages of the collection's development and notes the fascinating way in which decisions of interior design were closely linked with the complex architectural history of Pavlovsk Palace. The scholarly apparatus facilitates use of the catalogue as a source on the history of this form of applied art: hallmarks and signatures, biographical sketches of craftsmen, bibliography, list of archival documents.
