St. Petersburg: Izdatel'stvo sankt-peterburgskogo universiteta, 2002. Sewn cl. One of Russia’s most famous buildings, Rastrelli’s mid eighteenth-century Winter Palace, the tsar’s residence until 1917, was built on the foundations early eighteenth-century structures built for the founder of St. Petersburg himself. Peter the Great’s Western European collaborators designed the first imperial palaces on the bank of the Neva and in the process created an architectural methodology that fused Western European and Russian forms. The author researched the site together with Hermitage archeologists and tapped archives to describe and document the form and significance of the three antecedents of the Winter Palace. 220 p., 28 cm, 100 b-&-w illus., 52 color. Rus. with summary in ENGLISH. Series: Arkhitektura i istoriia (Architecture and History). Item #2501
