Gruzinskaia srednevekovaia torevtika v sobranii Ermitazha: issledovaniia i attributsii / Medieval Georgian Toreutics in the Hermitage Museum Collection

St. Petersburg: Slavia, 2016. Sewn pb. Most of these works of Georgian metalwork date to the twelfth to the sixteenth century and have a tortuous provenance. As a Christian country from the fourth century Georgia had to fend off the inroads of aggressive neighbors of other faiths, which as a small country it could not always do. In the introduction the author, a Hermitage curator, follows the formation of the Hermitage's collection, looks at the convoluted provenance of the works, and notes the woeful loss of many. Icon frames and crosses are made from silver and other metals usually in the form of a saint or Mary and resemble Byzantine metalwork in its heyday. 175 p., approx. 100 color illus., Rus., Georgian, and ENGLISH.
