Narodnoe iskusstvo Nizhegorodskogo kraia (Folk art of the Nizhnii Novgorod region)

St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2017. Sewn cl. The region of the lower Volga River distant from the westernized imperial capital of St. Petersburg preserved traditions of adorning everyday tools, carving architectural details, sculpting religious figures, embroidering clothing, and making lace long after these traditions died out in other parts of Russia. This catalogue of an extensive Russian Museum exhibition shows works mostly dating from the eighteenth to the early twentieth. Large sections of peasant houses — gables, window frames, cornices — quaintly carved in with floral patterns and imaginary figures; wooden sculptures defying the Eastern Orthodox preference for icons; ceramics brilliantly painted; holiday costume ensembles reminiscent of those seen in sixteenth-century Dutch paintings; embroidered shirts and shawls, lace scarves, together give an impression of a rich visual culture distinct from the Academic and Europeanizing art. 156 p., 23 x 25 cm, approx. 200 color illus., Rus.
