These works of church embroidery run the gamut from applied arts and costume )vestments, miters, coverings for icons, shrouds, aers) to works of religios art (icons). The imagery embroidered on icons is extraordinary for the lifelike expressions imparted to the faces. Influenced by Western European embroidery, an independent Russian school developed in the seventeenth century and attained a high degree of artistry. The art has undergone a revival in the post-Soviet period, and some examples of contemporary work are published.
