Works commissioned by the Armenian church in St. Petersburg during in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries and now at the Hermitage are the subject of this exhibition catalogue. Metalwork from craftsmen and artists in Russia and Western Europe includes reliquaries, crosses, chalices, candle holders, and bible covers; ecclesiastical textiles comprise miters, altar cloths, and vestments. An ancillary theme is the multicultural and tolerant character of St. Petersburg as the Russian Imperial capital from Peter the Great's passing of a law on religious tolerance in 1702 to Catherine the Great's granting the Armenian community in St. Petersburg a prime location on Nevskii Prospect for construction of Armenian Christian church.
