We see much more than the used anthologized images of the imperial capital's most famous vistas. Sadovnikov also did delicate richly detailed watercolors of interiors at suburban palaces (some of which were commissioned by Nicholas II for an album that he presented to Queen Victoria of England on the 10th anniversary of her reign in 1848), veduta of Moscow, Novgorod, and other cities; interiors of palaces and country estates; landscapes and genre scenes. Besides the high artistic level of the works, they are valuable for the content, which fixes architectural and interior design of the early and mid nineteenth century. The catalogue is the result of long study of the museum's drawing collection, and many works have only now been identified as Sadovnikov's; for some others sites or buildings are identified for the first time. 191 p., approx. 250 color illus., Rus.
