St. Petersburg: KGallery, 2018. Pb. The artist who is the subject of this gallery exhibition and catalogue came of age in the 1920s, a very rich and creative decade in the history of Russian and European art. He taught in Vitebsk and in the laboratory of the avant-garde VKhuTeMas (Vyshie khudozhestvenno-tekhnicheskie masterskie, higher artistic and technical studios). His painting has kinship with that of his great contemporaries - he trained with Valentin Serov and Konstantin Korovin, and there is a strain of impressionism in his early work. He also painted and studied art in Paris, lingering out a half year trip into a ten-year sojourn, and Cézanne was one of his inspirations, but he is at the same time distinct talent. He associated with eminent contemporaries doing portraits of and befriending Solomon Mikhoels, head of the Jewish Theater, and Andrei Yumashev, pilot and Hero of the Soviet Union, with whom he traveled through Central Asia painting ethnic types (his friendship with Yumashev probably saved him from Stalininist repressions). The works published here come from private collections in Moscow and St. Petersburg and will help historians of art to understand Fal'k's place in the context of the period. Two introductory articles and quotations from the artist himself enrich the catalogue, and the illustrations demonstrate his talent at subtle shades of color in landscape and still-life painting, his ability to catch the mood of a place in his cityscapes, and tone of his portraits that convey the inner life of his subjects. 68 p., 29 cm, approx. 50 color illus., Rus.
