Germany, Italy, France, England, and other European countries produced most of the approximately 400 works in this catalogue (some works are from Turkey and Persia) of a great collection brought to Moscow from Leipzig's Museum of the Book as trophy art after World War II. Dating from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century, the bindings from Becher's collection show all styles and schools of European book art. The author, an eminent historian of the book and curator of the Museum of the Book at the Russian State Library, gives a concise history of book art on the basis of the collection in her introduction to the catalogue.
