This catalogue of a collection at Vologda, one of medieval Russia’s great icon-painting schools, publishes detailed entries on each work, nicely reproduced plates, and a substantive introduction on provenance, schools of icon-painting, and iconography. The catalogue is followed by an extensive bibliography and list of icons in English, which enhance its value as a reference work. Icons were customarily unsigned: though this anonymity precludes the fame of individual artists, the author argues that their virtuosity was on the level of the great Western European artists of their age.
