The history of the collection reflects the tastes current among the Russian court in the eighteenth century. The first owner of the palace, Alexander Menshikov, began collecting works of Asian origin in the early eighteenth century and the subsequent residents, especially Catherine the Great, who commissioned the Chinese Palace from Antonio Rinaldi to house the collection, added works of various genres (carved and lacquered boxes, cloisonné, porcelain, ceramics, art furniture) mainly of Chinese and Japanese origin which expressed the European fascination with the Orient. 72 pp., 30 cm., 99 color illus., Rus.
