St. Petersburg: Rossiiskaia natsional'naia biblioteka, 2017. Pb. Published here are miniatures from Persian manuscripts of the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries illustrating compositions written by the fifteenth-century author Abdurrakhman Dzhami. His works vary greatly from didactic pieces (“Gift to the noble,” “The shah listens to instructions of the dervishes”) and mystical stories (“Intimate breezes from sacred presences”) to practical treatises on grammar and music. The manuscripts now at the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg have provenance sometimes tied to historic events, for example a set of manuscripts were sent to Emperor Nicholas I by the Shah as an indemnity for the murder of the Russian ambassador (and eminent playwright) Alexander Griboedov. 95 p., 28 cm, approx. 60 color illus., Rus. and ENGLISH.
