St. Petersburg: Rossiiskaia natsional'naia biblioteka, 2015. Abdu’l-Qasim Firdausi’s book of kings ("Shakh-Nama", A.D. 1010) mixes history and legend as it recounts the exploits of Iranian rulers. It was copied and recopied over the centuries, and the Russian National Library has 15 manuscripts dating from the 14th to the 19th centuries. The sampling published here both illustrates the chronicle and provides a survey of book art in Iran over five centuries. The introduction by the Russian National Library’s curators of Asian manuscripts sketches the author’s life, outlines the work, discusses the aesthetic aspects of the manuscript illuminations, and traces provenance of the St. Petersburg manuscripts. 93 p. approx. 60 color illus., Rus. and ENGLISH.
