Zapiski sumashedshego (Notes of a Madman)

Moscow: Muzei Anatoliia Zvereva, 2018. Sewn pb. The only artist of the second half of the twentieth century whose works form the basis of a full-fledged museum (Muzei Zvereva, Muzei AZ), Anatolii Zverev was enthralled early in his career by one of Nikolai Gogol’s “St. Petersburg Tales,” written in the 1830s. He did a series of drawings not so much illustrating the story as inspired by it. This is their first publication. They have the verve and energy typical of Zverev’s work, but also capture the eery bemused tone of Gogol’s narrative. 95 p., 24 cm, approx. 50 color and b/w illus. Rus. Item #2960
