Novaia Akademiia Sankt-Peterburg / New Academy Saint Petersburg

Moscow: Ekaterina, 2011. Sewn pb. This catalogue of an exhibition focuses on a generation of artists who adhered to a representational style that is neither realistic nor academic. Initiated in part during the 1980s by Timur Novikov, who coined “new academism” for the works of artists (including his own) that used figures, things, and places that were recognizable and hence related to figurative art; however, the artists put them in new combinations and not totally rational juxtapositions. Detailed articles present the style in the context of late Soviet art especially as it evolved in Leningrad, its neoclassical architectural ensembles challenging artists to do something as sublime and classical. An appendix publishes articles by Timur Novikov, and a chronology notes events from 1989 to 2011. The large format and many color plates show the works as forcefully as a catalogue can. Chapter titles: The Bronze Age of Petersburg; The Evening Glow: an Historical Sketch of St. Petersburg Neo-Academism; Leningrad Neo-Academism and Petersburg Hellenism; Non-Academic Notes in the New Academy. 459 p., 29 cm, approx. 300 color illus., ENGLISH or Russian.
