St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2018. Sewn cl. Two articles precede the catalogue in this rich and original Russian Museum exhibition catalogue. The first chapter of surveys the content of Yudovin's graphic art putting it in the context of World War II and the Leningrad blockade. The second relates Yudovin's works to those of other European artists whose subject was trauma and ruin such as Piranesi and Goya. The artist who did the woodcuts, linocuts, and monotypes published in this exhibition catalogue of the Russian Museum trained in Vitebsk when it was the cradle of the avant-garde during the last years of the Russian Empire. Still a teenager he studied with Yudel Pen, who also worked with Chagall and Lisitskii. Pen helped Yudovin take an interest in all forms of artistic expression as both artist and master craftsman. Working in Leningrad after the revolution Yudovin first did graphic art that was expressionistic, but in the 1930s after various styles of avant-garde and modernist art were branded formalism, he moved to more realistic forms. But the simplified pared-down imagery of what he depicted as he lived through the first and worst winter of the Leningrad blockade shows his early avant-garde training. 143 p., approx. 150 color illus., Rus. and ENGLISH.
