INTRODUCTION TO SET In the Soviet period children's books offer two angles besides the literal subject of juvenile literature: first, many of them are propagandistic and show one way in which the Soviet state was drumming in its ideology (e.g., in vol. 2 "Tanya the Revolutionary"); second, some very talented artists (such as Iurii Vasnetsov and Erik Bulatov) constrained while seeking a free original styles in easel painting for exhibition exercised their talent in children's book illustration as a less regimented form of art.
