St. Petersburg: Levsha, 2018. Sewn cl. Quarenghi trained in Rome in the 1760s, and his first designs in Italy were jibed with a light elegant form of Neoclassicism. Invited by Catherine the Great to work in St. Petersburg, he spent the rest of his career in Russia shaping some of the center of the Russian imperial capital, for example, the Academy of Sciences, the Hermitage Theater and Raphael Gallery, and Smolny. His work especially on outbuildings (e.g., pavilions and follies) in the parks of the St, Petersburg suburban palaces turned them into great estate ensembles. Besides drawings, photographs, and plans of his buildings the author has also compiled designs of Quarenghi's minor projects such as grave monuments, which reveal an ancillary but equally striking sphere of his creativity. 214 p., approx 200 color and b/w illus., Rus.
