St. Petersburg: Pushkinskii Dom, 2018. Sewn cl. This is the first publication of an illuminated seventeenth-century manuscript from the collection of the library at the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg (Pushkin House), and is the only known Old Russian manuscript dealing with celestial phenomena. It is a unique compilation on solar and lunar eclipses, meteorites, the northern lights, and other astronomical and atmospheric phenomena. The chronicler relates recent events in the state such as the Time of Troubles to natural prodigies. Seventy painted miniatures accompany the text: they bear some resemblance to Arabic manuscripts and are supposed to be the work of an icon painter in Kazan, the city in southern Russia with a large Tatar Islamic population. The first volume consists of a facsimile reproduction of the manuscript. Vol. 1: 583 p., approx. 500 color, Old Russian, Rus. with summary in ENGLISH. Run: 450. Item #3259
