This catalogue of an exhibition is an example of the current healthy phenomenon of state art museums collaborating with private collectors to exhibit and publish in scholarly catalogues rarely seen works. Formed in very recent times Bondarenko’s collection has examples of icon painting from different regions beginning in the seventeenth century through the early twentieth. The collector favors the Old-Believer style, which adhered to medieval canon even after church reforms revised the sanctioned imagery and style. Also strong in works of the later nineteenth century and early twentieth centuries that show a style that is an amalgam of the traditional canon and contemporary elements borrowed from secular art. A substantive introduction points out the highlights of the collection, and individual catalogue entries interpret the works.
