Now in the Russian State Library, the illuminated manuscript that is subject of this exhibition catalogue is a vivid example of the collaboration of icon-painters and scribes, and its high level of calligraphy and miniature painting shaped styles in the new technology of book printing. Isaac Birev’s script in this 1531 Gospel became the standard for printed books as did the ornaments and initials of his collaborators. The miniatures were done by or influenced by the work of Theodosius, son of the great icon-painter Dionysius. The introduction by the former director of the Rublev Museum of Medieval Russian Culture and Art connects the strands of different arts and explains the distinctiveness of Birev’s style.
