Bergamo, Italy: Lemma, 2017. Sewn cl. To compile the materials and write this monograph the author did years of unprecedented research in the Russian archives holding manuscripts and notebooks of the great novelist. Compiling, analyzing, and publishing what amounts to a nonverbal adjunct to Dostoevsky’s novels, Professor Barsht gives us a whole other plane from which to look at Dostoevsky’s works and get glimpses into his method of creating characters and stories. Dostoevsky drew faces, architectural details, and doodles in the manuscripts as he worked on such novels as Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, The Demons, and The Karamazov Brothers, all of which were relevant to what he was writing. The book is in part a collaboration between Konstantin Barsht and the eminent American scholar of Dostoevsky, the late Robert Belknap, who supported Professor Barsht’s research with a grant and assisted in the translation of parts of the book into English. The Italian publisher has scrupulously reproduced the drawings at actual size and in their original colors. 450 + xi p., 34 cm, approx. 200 color illus., Rus. or ENGLISH. Item #3361
