St. Petersburg: Muzei teatral'nogo i muzykal'nogo iskusstva, 2019. Sewn pb. From Mikhail Larionov’s design for a 1916 ballet “Russian Fairy Tales” and Kazimir Malevich's costumes for "Victory over the Sun" to the designs for Dmitrii Shostakovich’s 1934 opera “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District,” the last tsarist years, the revolutionary period, and the early Soviet years before Stalin clamped down saw a wondrous explosion of creativity. The theme of this exhibition catalogue of the Museum of Theater and Music in St. Petersburg is the way directors, authors, composers and artists synthesized their various arts into a whole composition. The catalogue publishes designer drawings for sets and costumes and archival photographs of actual productions that show how artists' imaginings crystalized on stage. The catalogue's title comes from a production by Vsevolod Meyerhold and Liubov Popova, which expresses the spirit of the time. Articles explain expressionism in the drama and musical theater. 187 p., approx 200 color and b/w illus., Rus. Item #3474
