This concise catalogue of an exhibition at the Hermitage gives a sampling of the styles of German art current at the turn of the twentieth century, when German artists’ colonies, shunning the metropolis, were formed in rural settings. Moderson-Becker had the distinction of cultivating modernism in an artists’ colony where many of her peers adhered to nineteenth-century aesthetics. She made four trips to Paris in the early years of the twentieth century and brought back an interest in primitive art, an awareness of the experiments of artists like Cézanne and Gaughin, and a desire to master new forms in her own work.
