Viktoriia Kal’vatone: sud’ba odnogo shedevra (The Calvatone Victory: Fate of a Masterpiece)

German, Italian, and Russian scholars collaborated on this catalogue of an exhibition at the Hermitage about a work of Roman sculpture dating to the second century A.D., which was found in Lombardy in 1836 and soon thereafter acquired by the Ancient Collection of State Museums of Berlin (originally Royal Prussian Museum). After World War II Soviet forces brought it to the Soviet Union as trophy art. The iconography of the statue its pairing with Jupiter, for exmple; its parallels with other ancient figures like Diana the Huntress and Diana the Light-Bearer; the rarity of an extant Roman sculptural work in bronze; the controversy about its production; the phases of restoration; and its tortuous provenance are among the themes of the articles. Another subject of research published here is the image and iconography of the goddess of victory in both ancient and modern art. Visual material comprises sculpture, prints, drawings, cameos and coins.
