The history of porcelain at the St. Petersburg factory in continuous operation since the mid eighteenth century has interest from several points of view: as a flourishing artistic/industrial center that designed and produced masterpieces of decorative and applied art and, the theme of this catalogue, as a sister art to painting, sculpture, and architecture reflecting changes in European style from age to age. Sketches used to design porcelain and drawings of interiors in which porcelain plays a part in the interior give a full sense of the art from conception to use. Distinct qualities and subjects peculiar to Russian porcelain (e.g. historical events and figurines of ethnographic types of the Russian Empire such as Tartars of the Crimea, Georgians of the Caucasus, and Buryats of Siberia) are another theme. The revolutionary period produced styles like Malevich’s suprematism, Kandinsky’s and Suetin’s geometric forms, and new new subjects as slogans and revolutionary heroes made their way into the imagery. Socialist realism idealizing the Soviet way of life can be seen, for example, in a hydroelectric plant embellishing a vase of 1940 and in the benign decorative patterns of the later Soviet period.
