The names of Andrei and Ivan Likhachev are inseparable from the history of collecting and museum activities in Kazan, where they opened the first public collection of archeology, numismatics, ethnography, and art. This exhibition catalogue presents for the first time the art collection in its entirety: paintings, engravings, sculptures, items of the decorative and applied arts from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries. At the same time the catalogue recounts the history of the Likhachevs whose descendants still live in Kazan. The exhibition catalogue reproduces paintings and drawings by Russian artists (Aivazovsky, Beggrow, Borovikovsky, Briullov, Levitsky, Perov, Shishkin, A. Likhachev, Khudiakov, Remel, Maksimov, Zhuravlev), paintings woodcuts and etchings by Western European masters (Lucas Cranach the Elder, Dietrich, Lampi, Heemskerk, Cuyp, Stimmer, Matthäus, Merian, Caspar Merian, Riedinger), and a range of Russian and Western European sculpture and decorative arts (candlesticks, paired vases, teapots, plates and dishes). The extensive graphic art collection of the museum is well represented her.
