The extraordinary breadth of the arms collection of the Museum of Artillery, Engineering and Communication Troops (St. Petersburg) enables the author to survey the history of each kind of blade weapon as it developed in various countries of Europe. Although the majority of the pieces are combat weapons rather than ceremonial arms, they often have engraved blades and decorated hilts, showing the kinship of arms- and jewelry-making. The author gives an overview of the collection and then catalogues 528 works.
