St. Petersburg: Herm, 2020. Saddle-stitched. This brief catalog of a Hermitage exhibition unfolds the life of one Alexander II's sons. Sergei had an impact on the culture of his time after he took a pilgrimage to the Holy Land after his father's assassination and became head of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society. As a collector and patron of the arts he brought to St. Petersburg important work of world art such as a collection of ancient terracottas, which he exhibited at the Historical Museum and Stroganov Institute. He also supported the founding of the Museum of Fine Arts. He gained a reputation as a reationary after Alexander III appointed him governor of Moscow, where he was assassinated by a revolutionary's bomb in 1905. His collection numbered about 200 works, which his widow donated to the Hermitage: published here are examples such as miniatures and snuffboxes of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries from France and Switzerland, and other Western European countries. 23 p., 21 cm, approx. 40 color illus., Rus. with title page in ENGLISH.
