St. Petersburg: Herm, 2020. Sewn cl. This Hermitage exhibition catalogue homes in on the theme of the connections between contemporary art and Old Master paintings, in particular between the paintings of the Romanian artist Adrian Ghenie and the work in the Hermitage which he believes inspired him to become an artist and which he managed to see in a Soviet era art book during his childhood in communist Romania. Ghenie paints in a style that is far from representational yet he seems to allude in many works to representational imagery of the past. New paintings by him that he did for this Hermitage exhibition are published together with some of the works in the Hermitage that he considers wellsprings of his art — as varied as Velasquez and Kandinskii. The paintings have the vividness and harshness of many of his works and often allude to dark themes such as the brutal dictatorships of the twentieth century (Ghenie grew up under the oppressive regime of Ceausescu). Introducing the catalogue are two articles and a conversation between the artist and the curator of contemporary art at the Hermitage. 86 p., 29 cm, approx. 25 color illus., Rus. and ENGLISH.
