The first section publishes embroidered and painted icons, crucifixes, reliquaries, chalices, and bible covers that come from churches and monasteries in and around Murom. The second section draws on the collection built in the early twentieth century by the painter from Murom Ivan Kulikov, who trained with Repin and was enthralled with the variety and beauty of folk costume and applied art. He collected all forms of folk costume especially rare and vivid examples of hats worn by women indicating their social and marital status. Works published in the third section of the catalogue come from the estate in the Murom region that belonged to Sergei Uvarov, who led research into the medieval past of Russia / Rus' founding the Moscow Archaeological Commission in the mid nineteenth century, and whose wife Praskovia headed the commission after her husband's death in 1884. Italian sculpture of the eighteenth century, German and French neoclassical furniture, Russian and French porcelain of the Empire period, and French bronzes give a coherent picture of the style of the elite of the Russian gentry of the time.
