St. Petersburg: Herm, 2020. Sewn pb. The Thaw or the period after Stalin's death when the Communist leadership of the Soviet Union became less stringent in controlling and censoring publishers, artists, and writers led to a freedom and creativity not experienced since the 1920s. As a branch of art capable of reaching many people porcelain quickly became politicized in the early days of the Soviet Union, when the greatest porcelain producer in Russian, active since the eighteenth century, the Imperial Porcelain Factory, was revamped to produce objects not for a court, but for everyday use and incorporating the emblems and images of the Soviet regime. After a burst of creativity in the 1920s the factory was reined in during Stalin's years as head of the party, but renewed its creative traditions after his death in the period that became known as the Thaw — the theme of this catalogue of an exhibition at the Hermitage. With a bibliography and an index of artists and sculptors,188 p., approx. 150 color illus., Rus. with title page, contents, and summary in ENGLISH. Hermitage series: A Christmas Offering (Podnesenie k Rozhdestvu). Item #3948
