St. Petersburg: Rus muz, 2020. Sewn cl. This catalogue of an exhibition at the Russian Museum gives credit to the donors, patrons, and collectors from the late nineteenth century to the present whose gifts to the museum make up the bulk of its collections. The Imperial Family were among the major nineteenth- and early twentieth-century donors. Many works by Russian nineteenth-centuiry painters originated in the collection of Alexander III, and Nicholas II donated great works of icon-painting and works by the principal painters of the late imperial period such as Vasilii Vereshchagin, Konstantin Makovskii, Ilya Repin, Vasilii Surikov, and Valentin Serov. As the author's overview indicates, private collectors like the great researcher of Byzantine and early Russian art Nikodim Kondakov and relatives of artists, such as the daughter of Iva Suetin and the sister of Pavel Filonov, were also principal sources. 327 p., 32 cm, approx. 300 color illus., Rus.
