Moscow: Tret'iakovskaia galereia, 2021. Sewn cl. First among the Nikonovs presented in this Tretyakov Gallery exhibition catalogue is an artist who provoked the mockery and indignation of Nikita Krushchev in 1962 at the Manège exhibition and then became know for a pared down realism "the severe style" of the late Soviet period. That would be a significant enough career, but Pavel Nikonov has managed to avoid repeating himself and in a seventy-year artistic career is still at work discovering aspects of the world yet to be expressed and new ways to express them. Pavel Nikonov's paintings published here date from the 1950s to the present. His brother's works were painted from the 1950s to the 1990s; they have a style that is realistic but it's not socialist realism: there is a sharpness and somber mood to many of them, and he dispenses in some of his works with conventional organization of space showing that he learned from the experiments of the avant-garde. Also published in this catalogue are works by Pavel's daughter Victoria. Early death curtailed her career, and the works she painted were still further from realism: she created beautiful compositions using subtle patterns of color merely hinting at her subject. Beautifully produced and clothbound with five substantive articles, a chronicle, and summary in English. 169 p., 28 cm, approx. 150 color illus., Rus. with summary in ENGLISH. Item #4032
