They follow two cycles of his research: the first being gold coins of early Rus’ when the young state was centered around Kyiv in the tenth and eleventh century. Spasskii's second subject of study was gold coins from the fifteenth century to the late eighteenth. He publishes coins from every reign beginning with Ivan III in the fifteenth century In the imperial period Dutch prototypes were used to mint coins in St. Petersburg. Also published are correspondence and archival documents on Spasskii’s career, full of scholarly successes and personal ordeals, including arrest in 1933 and years in the Gulag in connection with the Slavists’ Affair.
