The Museum of the History of St, Petersburg has a rich collection of architectural drawings, plans, and designs, especially of the early twentieth century when the museum (then called Museum of Old St. Petersburg) was referee in architectural competitions. This catalogue based on an exhibition publishes visual documents for sixteen architectural designs from the very specific such as a monumental sculpture of Lenin designed for Revolution Square to the large-scale: a recasting of the street grid for central St. Petersburg, turning canals into esplanades. One of the plans though unrealized became famous as a symbol of the experimental avant-garde designs of the time: Vladimir Tatlin's Monument to the III International, known as Tatlin's tower, which was to be 400 meters in height and to incorporate publishing offices, a printing press, and meeting halls.
