St. Petersburg: Pavlovsk, 2019. Sewn cl. The abundance of world art in Russian museums today owes much to the ardent collecting by members of the Russian imperial family. The subject of this Pavlovsk Palace Museum exhibition catalogue is Grand Duchess Maria Fedorovna's (later empress, wife of Emperor Paul, r. 1795–1801) fascination with and pursuit of works of ancient art. The works became objects for exhibiting and display, and also inspired the design of palace interiors and parks. In her travels with Paul in the 1780s Maria Fedorovna purchased works from collectors, and in the nineteenth century, after Paul's assassination, when her son Alexander reigned, she was engrossed by archeological exploration of Southern Russia and the Crimea, which yielded ancient artifacts and works of art. The catalogue publishes works that Maria Fedorovna collected, paintings and prints depicting Paul and Maria at sites in Italy associated with antiquity, and other works of eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century painting and drawing that deal more broadly wih the ancient world as source of inspiration (e.g., creating ruins in the palace parks). 207 p., 30 cm, approx. 150 color and b/w illus., Rus.
