At his estate built by his father Vasilii Meshcherin a textile merchant, Nikolai Meshcherin painted and photographed, inviting artists such as Isaac Levitan and Igor Grabar to work at his studio, thus forming an artist colony of sorts. This catalogue of an exhibition at the Museum of Russian Impressionism publishes for the first time most extant works by Meshcherin from fifteen museums and private collections, especially the Tretyakov Gallery, which recently a large block of works from the estate of the art historian Nikolai Gagman. In straightforward efforts to render various aspects of the countryside in his landscape paintings, Meshcherin avoids both "effects" sometimes seen in the works of French Impressionists and turning the landscape into a vehicle for the artist's moods and feeling. 239 p., 30 cm, approx. 200 color and b/w illus., Rus.
