Moscow: Gelios, 2020. Sewn pb. The abundance of foreign firms in Russia, the vociferous advertisements for all kinds of goods during the last decades the Russian Empire prompted a boom in commercial graphics — the imagery of the advertisement posters resembles and differs from counterparts in the West. It is garish and eye-catching but has someting of icon-painting and the popular print (lubok). Styles also are akin to ones prevalent in decorative arts such as Neo-Russian style. Woman sipping cacao look fashionable but they are wearing that often derives from peasant costume. The posters come from the unique collection of the Russian State Library, and the range of subjects is broad: the posters promote everyday articles like soap and more recherché ones for the time like automobiles. Charity benefits for World War I, theater and movie entertainment are also frequent subjects. 383 p., 27 cm, approx. 600 color and b/w illus., Rus. Item #4215
