Ikony Velikogo Novgoroda XI – nachala XVI veka / Novgorod the Great Icons of the 11th – Early 16th Centuries, 9785944314369; XI-- XVI

Moscow: Vifaniia / Severnyi palomnik, 2021 (1st ed. 2008). Sewn cl. The works of icon-painting deriving from the Novgorod area have several distinguishing traits: "extraordinary dignity, nobility, and exceptional spareness of artistic style," as Engelina Smirnova writes in her introduction. The role of instructing and inculcating doctrine in a region relatively new to Christianity was central. Another circumstance was Novogord's many wooden churches, which meant that icons rather than frescoes were the predominant form of church art. There seems to be a coherent style from the oldest extant icons (ca. 1150) throughout the centuries of Novgorod's being an independent art center (early 1500s), variations of course appearing as icon-painters working in the context of Rus' and Byzantium had different emphases at different times and under different church leaders. Bibliography, index of icon subjects, and an appendix on churches for which the icons were thought to be painted strengthen the book as a reference. 552 p., 28 cm, approx. 300 color and b/w illus., Rus. with title page, list of illustrations, and introductions in ENGLISH.
