St. Petersburg: Pavlovsk, 2014. sewn pb. Works from two collections are published in this catalogue of an exhibition at Pavlovsk Palace Museum. They display how ivory carving, which had its heyday in Western Europe in the Middle Ages, flourished in eighteenth-century Russia, where even the empress, Maria Fedorovna, wife of Emperor Paul, learned the art producing modest works of nice craftsmanship. The range of styles derives from different schools and regions of the country such as the naive but forceful style of the folk artists of the northern Russia (Kholmogory) and the spare academic style of artists receiving commissions from the court in St. Petersburg. Subjects are both secular and religious, and the best pieces resemble miniature sculptures. 178 p., 21 x 21 cm., 169 color illus., Rus. Item #43
